Hunt Report: Feb. 9, 2008 Junior Hunt

Fixture:  Quail Hollow, 10 a.m.

Members:  Lili, Kate, Michael, Judy, Carol, Tom, Mary K, Marie, Cheryl, Jan & Steve, Sarah, David & Cheryl, Lee, Earl and various guests & juniors

Weather:  Finally very nice weather! A little warm, but not too bad.

Hounds: 10 couple

I.D. Awards:  Michael briefly visits the ground. Dini takes a fall when her horse went one way and she went the other to avoid a tree, and hurts her back and has to go in.

Misc. Notations:  Lots of jumping today. Tom viewed chased coyote near Booth Rd.

Map:  Click here for Map of Junior Hunt, courtesy of Tom-Tom (our resident GPS)

Tailgate/Breakfast:  Once again, too much food. It’s so good, and so much fun, but I think everyone should bring diet food as my breeches are getting tight!!

The Hunt:  Hounds found right away in Quail Hollow field where we parked. Dawson opened and his booming voice let all the others know it was a fox. They worked feverishly but couldn’t take it anywhere. The entire field got to watch them working in that small area.

Lili picks them up and moves on over to the fields across from the church pines and down to the honey pot pines. They find again and head over toward Bohannon’s new house, but lose it in the pines and we move on again.

We cross over to behind RSG’s house, and run into some rabbit hunters with their beagles, so we go through the woods toward the Meadows, and down to the pond. They start working again and lead us up the trail to the coop at the back of the cutover, and into Franklin Farm. We move on through the gate into Billy Cox’s where they strike in the woods and take off. We end up at the back of the Burks’ farm, and head down to the creek. We all gallop down to the power line, and head up the steep trail toward Booth Rd.

Tom is further up and hears them screaming through the woods, then he views the coyote cross the pasture up by Booth Rd. We gallop as fast as we can to catch up to Lili and hounds on Booth Rd. We go into the cutover for a bit to try and gather up the rest of the hounds and decide to hunt back in the other way or we’d end up going further away.

The wind starts picking up and the scenting is not as good so we end up packing up the hounds and heading in, all the way through Bobcat Alley and up through the back of the Meadows. Sally is not coming in so we wait and try to get her to come since we have to cross roads to get back, but she is not cooperating. She shows up at the trailers once the fried chicken is unwrapped (coincidence? or she got hungry LOL!) So all hounds are now back safe and sound, and we all enjoy a delicious breakfast and reminisce the events and what everyone saw.

Thanks again to everyone who helped Dini get back to the trailers and who helped to catch her horse. Dini was thankful to everyone and sorry to have missed the rest of the day, as she was really enjoying it!

Hunt Report: Feb. 5, 2008

Fixture:  Wallis Farm, 10 a.m.

Members:  Lili on Seattle, Judy on Anne, Cheryl M. on Opus, Carol on Dashielle, Kate on Jane, Melissa on Lacey, Dr. Cheryl on Koko, Marie on Emma, Vicky on Ginger, Caroline Guests (Deb & Alan & Taylar, Gwynne & Steve, Vicky) and Glenmore Guests (Joe, Stacey, Angelika, and Chris), and friends of Vicky’s (Sherree and Morgan), and Earl & Howard followed in “Silver”.

Weather:  Warm and windy, sunny and still a little muddy

Hounds: 8 1/2 couple

I.D. Awards:  none today! :-) although Judy almost got one (see below)

Misc. Notations:  Anne is apparently very hot and itchy and decides to take a roll in the creek to cool off…with Judy still aboard. Judy can’t get feet out of stirrup, so they both go down together, getting a nice mudbath spa treatment!

Tailgate/Breakfast:  Once again, too much food. We’re all going to get fat this way. Also included birthday cake for Taylar, Deb & Alan Fox’s daughter

The Hunt:  Lili draws in the pines down toward the creek, and works up to the gasline. Hounds find at the gas line and pretty much stay in there for a good long time. Judy & Carol are down the four-post road, and hear them going round and round and round. Eventually a couple puppies stray on a deer that popped up in front of them, so we had a good opportunity for some deer training. Then we gather the hounds up and head over to the bottom of Loee’s house. We jump the coop at the creek, the log jump into the woods, and work our way up. A few of us lark over a stray small round bale in the woods.

At this point the weather has gotten really warm. Hounds worked well over an hour on the gray fox down in the pines. Scenting was definitely not that great, but they stuck with it. After being out for over 2.5 hours, we headed in with some tired hounds and some sweaty riders.

A few hardy souls go back to the big coop behind the trailers to give it a test run and have a big time whooping it up over the jump, then head in.

Thank you to all the guests who made the long trip out to hunt with us on a weekday. We enjoyed everyone’s company greatly, and hope to see you all again soon.

Yours truly,

 Cheryl M.

Hunt Report: Feb. 2, 2008

Fixture:  Bonnydale Farm, 11 a.m.

Members:  Lili on Jubilee, Judy on Anne, Cheryl M. on Opus, Tom on Dancer, Kate on Jane, Mary K on Ginny, Dr. Cheryl on Koko, Jan & Steve, Sarah, various Glenmore guests

Weather:  Very nice, mild, sunny and very MUDDY

Hounds: 10 1/2 couple

I.D. Awards:  none today! :-)

Tailgate/Breakfast:  Can you say, YUMMY!! And fattening. Entirely too much food.

The Hunt:  Lili draws at the gasline by the holey trail, hounds strike and work their hearts out between the gasline between Ruckers Road and the trailers, then work their way back to the trailers and over to the other side, toward the coop. They are hot on something, but we can never find where it trailed out.

We work the edge of all those fields, trying to find the fox, but to no avail. So we dropped down through the bottom of the Bonnydale Farm and came up through Helen Wise Elliotts hay bale field, and into the four-wheeler trails.

Hounds also found over in the woods behind the Pugh trailer, and ran what we believe to be a bobcat for awhile.

We then head over and drop down below Katie’s house and work our way up to the powerline. Follow this over to the peninsula of pines, then over Ingrid’s coop, then over to Evans Farm where they found again, and ran something over to the pond and back and at the bottom of the gasline.

They worked hard over there, and three deer were viewed. The hounds stayed true on the fox line, except for 2 puppies, who were quickly reminded and came right back.

They trailed it over to below the pond then lost it. We headed out the fields back to the gate on the gas line. We all watched Kate and Jane jump the coop in lovely fashion then headed back in with all the hounds.

The breakfast was lots of fun, and way too much food, we all enjoyed the delicious fare. We hope to see our Glenmore guests again soon, they are a very fun and friendly group!

Yours truly,

Cheryl M.
